How do I get photos from photo software to Word document?

I have some photos in my various photo software files and I would like to put them in a word document. When I drag them or try to import them, I don't get the picture, just the words. How can I get these photos into my word document? Also, I get a notice that says my picture exceeds 27" - I have no idea why, or how to change it!

1. Save the picture as a jpg. In Word choose insert picture and point to the files locatrion. That is probably the easiest way to go.
2. Either use your Picture Manager to upload or jpg.
3. Your photos may be too big for a Word document. One way of making them smaller is to right click on the file and choose send to E-mail. You will then be asked if you want the pictures to be smaller for mail purposes. Agree and then you can open your smaller picture from the mail form. If you don´t want to use your photo software to change the file extension and the size. Earlier answers has pointed you to the right format and procedure to insert a picture in Word.
