photo-editing?

ok i want to mae a graphic thats got a black background, with a black cross. the only thing that shows the cross is there is a light that would be shining behind it. its like there is a bright light behind the cross, but all you can see it the rays shining around the edges. can someone tell me how to do that on a photo editing program? i have photoshop cs3 and paint.net

1. Which photo program are you using? Edit: I'm sorry John I only have experiences in PaintShopPro9&Adobe Photoshop 7. I do have cs3 but I rarely use it.I hope that Vince's idea can help you in this one or some else:)
2. Background and cross need to be on separate layers. Select the background layer, or, even better, create a new layer between the background and the cross. Then, in the filters menu, click on render and then lens flare. Play around and find a setting that provides the exact kind of light effect you want to see.
