  1. Why would your model of camera make any difference? That is such an amateur/newbie thing to point out.

It would help to have some business know-how, maybe even more than photography skills. So take a course or two on management and get in touch with your local Small Business Administration for help in making a sustainable business plan, and consult a tax attorney or accountant to get your tax obligations in line, and your insurance agent for coverage, both liability and equipment.

Photographically speaking, if you were ready, (both equipment and knowledge wise) to start a photography business you would not be here on Y!A asking what equipment you need. The brutal truth is the market is flooded and overflowing with new photography "businesses", in the main haphazardly started by people with a nice camera who want an easy side income. A few of these people may have some skill, perhaps you are one yourself. But it seems a lot of the new business owners are also new photographers who are still depending on auto mode, shooting hundreds of frames in hopes they will stumble upon a good one, and burning a CD for $20. Their skills are mediocre, but they are cheap so who cares? They will care when they screw up a major event like a wedding and find themselves on the wrong end of a lawsuit.

Not dumping specifically on you, you may be a fabulously skilled and seasoned photographer with a degree in accounting. If so you may do well in the business. But it takes more than simply wanting to hang a shingle to make it in this economy, and photography ain’t the easy cash cow it appears to be on the surface.

  2. get a solid education in lighting and image making, the lights and gear will follow,

then take your portfolio to those hire photographers in the niche you choose and your laughing
